On the Real Watership Down

The Cottage by Lower Bridge

Resting after their escape from Efrafa, the rabbits are spotted from a garden close to the Lower Bridge.

As they continued to look in the direction where Kehaar had gone, Hazel noticed for the first time a cottage at the far end of the track, where the grass sloped up to join the road. A man, taking care to keep still, was leaning over the hedge and watching them intently. Hazel stamped and bolted into the undergrowth of the swamp, with Bigwig hard on his heels.

‘You know what he’s thinking about?’ said Bigwig. ‘He’s thinking about the vegetables in his garden.’
‘I know,’ replied Hazel. ‘And we shan’t be able to keep this lot away from them once they get the idea into their heads. The quicker we push on the better.’

Chapter FortyThe Way Back

The house by Lower Bridge in Laverstoke.

In Chapter Forty, The Way Back, Kehaar says his goodbyes to the Watership Down rabbits close to Lower Bridge in Laverstoke Park.

It is at this point that Hazel notices a man is closely watching them from behind the hedge of ‘a cottage at the far end of the track, where the grass sloped up to join the road.’ This is enough to convince Hazel that the rabbits must quickly depart to begin their long journey north back to Watership Down.

The red brick cottage is situated alongside the B3400 in Laverstoke, next to a green security gate that leads over Lower Bridge and into the Park.
